DOWNTOWN DELIGHTS

Don’t hate me, but I’m one of those rare Valley residents with a breezy commute. At 1.3 miles from door to door, my biggest challenge en route to the office is to avoid rubbernecking at the latest additions to Kierland Commons or Scottsdale Quarter.

With this plum commute and luxurious neighborhood amenities, I easily could stay close to home – to shop, dine, and explore. Recently, however, I’ve gotten out there a bit. In late May, my husband I ventured (wait for it) – eight miles – south to Canal, the popular waterfront restaurant at SouthBridge. It was lunchtime and still cool enough to sit outside under an umbrella. We noshed, talked, and watched a parade of pedestrians, from college students animated with stories from the previous evening to new parents pushing strollers, traverse the esplanade. It was a great time and something different from our routine.

With a massive infusion of capital, quality architecture, and the publicity juggernaut of the Super Bowl to anoint its revitalization, Downtown Scottsdale is worth the drive. The Airpark’s merits are extensive. Within Scottsdale, we continue to attract the highest concentration of workers Valley-wide. However, I hope that Airpark residents and employees will occasionally make that short drive south to support Downtown – whether it’s to buy a decadent cupcake, celebrate a colleague’s birthday, or splurge on a new pair of fabulous jeans.

On our cover in August is an image of SouthBridge taken by Alan Staats of Amundsen-Staats in mid-June 2008. Of the twilight shoot, Staats commented that the mood at the Waterfront and SouthBridge was upbeat. He, too, witnessed couples braving the early evening heat to take strolls, friends having wine al fresco, and an almost European sense of community evolving. Staats and his business partner, Jennifer Amundsen (pictured, above right), took a break themselves after the shoot to take it all in and relax.

We hope that you enjoy our Downtown issue – sit back, take it all in, and relax. And consider adding the area’s many attractions to your routine.
