This is great news for the Airpark! An ASU master’s business program, geared to professionals who want to attend school at night, now has a permanent home in North Scottsdale. In recent years, ASU offered classes at three roving NoSco sites, but this is the MBA program’s first permanent site in the area–and it’s smack in the Airpark.

For those who might be scratching their head about where Hartford Drive is, it’s that street off Perimeter between Bell & Princess, near the Princess Cafe. Here’s a map.

It looks like classes won’t begin here for new students until the August ‘10 semester. I’ll post more info later this week. Until then, here is the official press release:

Scottsdale officials are welcoming news that Arizona State University’s W. P. Carey School of Business will bring its highly rated part-time MBA program to a location convenient to the Scottsdale Airpark, 8355 E. Hartford Drive.

The school will introduce the new location, at the northeast corner of Bell Road and 82nd Street, during an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

“This is a great location, easily accessible to the Scottsdale Airpark, one of the largest and most sought-after employment centers in the state,” said Mayor W. J. “Jim” Lane. “We made it a priority to assist ASU with this new location because a highly skilled and educated workforce is one of the primary reasons Scottsdale is an attractive city for employers.”

To help the school locate in Scottsdale, staff from the Economic Vitality and the Planning, Neighborhoods and Transportation divisions worked together to speed review and guide the project through the city’s processes.

“Scottsdale is one of the favored locations for start-up companies and for solid, medium-size businesses,” said Harold Stewart, executive director of the city’s Economic Vitality Division. “The convenience of a highly ranked master’s program in business fits well with the city’s efforts to help maintain an economically vital community for the long term. It is one more key asset in our program to recruit new businesses and retain those already here.”

The school offers one of the best part-time MBA programs in the country, with an evening MBA program ranked “Top 25″ in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

“We’ve had a presence in Scottsdale for several years, but we’re making it permanent with our new facility,” said W. P. Carey School of Business Dean Robert Mittelstaedt.

“Scottsdale has been one of our most popular locations, so we found a great space that will be convenient for those working and living in the East Valley,” said Beth Walker, associate dean of the W. P. Carey MBA program.

“This new facility offers four fully equipped team rooms, wireless network access throughout the entire suite, LCD displays, interactive monitors and easy access to the 101 freeway.”

The 21-month W. P. Carey evening MBA program offers a high-caliber core business curriculum, with the ability to specialize in several areas of emphasis, including finance, health care management, international business, marketing and supply chain management.

A popular 18-month evening accelerated version is also offered at the Tempe campus, with the next class starting in February. In both cases, students meet just two nights per week, allowing them to fit their MBA programs into their busy work and home lives.

[Editor's Note: This link should save you a little time. It appears to be the one with info on the MBA evening option at the Airpark locale, noting an August start date.]

If you missed the Scottsdale Airpark Meet Your Neighbor Lunch, more than 100 people attended, and the energy in the room was electric. I arrived about 20 minutes in, and felt like an hour wasn’t enough time to network since the raffle and chamber speeches are at the end.

I spoke with a first-time, non-chamber member who had some ideas for the next lunch, which will happen in November. She said she’d be willing to pay $20 for a table to display her collateral and help to make the event free so more people come.

An interesting idea. Those with display tables—if you had enough of them—could subsidize the $5 lunch for people who just want to network, like a mini tradeshow. Though a fiver isn’t much, a free lunch always brings out the crowds. (By the way, Meatballz really makes some delicious meatballs.)

This was funny … one of the Scottsdale Airpark News ad execs won the $25 Sam’s Club gift card in the raffle, and a Sam’s Club representative won our raffle donation of tix to Legally Blonde. They were thrilled and so were we.

I would love to share a photo of the event, but the wonderful Wordpress program I’m using has decided I can no longer (as of today) post photos that are larger than 2MB. I was told the Scottsdale chamber took video of the event and posted it on the web, but I just spent 10 minutes browsing their site and searching Google for keywords “Airpark Meet Your Neighbor” … and nothing turns up except links to my own blog.

Sounds like a discussion topic for the next social media class that I’m taking at the chamber with Dave Cooke.

Guess you’ll have to wait for the October issue of the Airpark News to get a glimpse. I apologize in advance for my photography anti-skills.

If you grew up in the Valley, like I did, you’re probably familiar with the phenomenon of “stranger neighbor.” Unless your kids played together or you needed somebody’s power tools, you likely don’t know the names of those humans breathing a few yards from your driveway.

The same thing can happen in a business community, which is why the Airpark Committee is trying to help us get to know each other. The concept is simple but brilliant: Everybody who works in the Airpark is invited to a quarterly Meet Your Neighbors lunch. In two days—Thursday, Sept. 17—the staff of the Airpark News will be joining at least 50 others at the Raintree Corporate Center to meet, greet and eat.

Airpark Meet Your Neighbors
11:30am-1:00pm
Location: DataPreserve
Raintree Corporate Center
15300 N. 90th Street
Suite 500
Scottsdale, AZ  85260
$5 Donation includes lunch and networking

Yes, I hope to win one of the raffle prizes (I really want that car-care kit … or the tickets to Legally Blonde), but I’m truly excited about meeting more Airparkers, face-to-face. I was brand new to SAN when I dropped by the first luncheon in April; among the sea of new emailed names, I still remember those “neighbors” I personally met and the businesses they represented. There is simply no match for a handshake. Breaking bread together doesn’t hurt either.

And that’s the point of Meet Your Neighbors. When times are tough, you need to rely on your neighbors and to help them when you can. The first step is getting to know each other.

“It’s like when you move into a neighborhood and have a block party,” says Laureen Leston, committee chair and president of Angel Errands Marketing, who has worked tirelessly to recruit attendees. “We don’t have the beer, and we don’t have the band, but we have the social aspect—the camaraderie of neighbors getting together and building partnerships.”

To Whom Do You Refer?

Referrals are the name of the game. Meet Your Neighbors is a delicious opportunity to be a referral source for others as well as yourself.

In fact, if we’re to build the Scottsdale Airpark into a thriving and shining example of what a commerce community should be, maybe we make an extra effort to do business with each other—make it a priority to at least get an Airpark neighbor into the running for whatever service or product we seek.

“Meet Your Neighbors is really getting back to that simple ABCs of ‘I’ve got your back, you’ve got my back,’” says Leston. “Everybody is going to die on the vine if we don’t support each other and bring each other through tough times.”

Leston says the Airpark Committee has called well over 300 businesses in the last 4 weeks and visited dozens of storefronts and offices. Each quarter, the lunch will move to another sector—or pod—of the Airpark. Leston canvassed the entire Raintree Center area, walking in and introducing herself, the committee and the chamber. “It’s grassroots all the way,” she says.

By the way, the Airpark Committee is indeed a Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce offshoot. But Meet Your Neighbors is not a members-only event. Everyone is invited; the chamber is merely acting as a conduit, and attendees are welcome to learn more about the benefits of chamber membership.

I’ll be shooting pics at the luncheon. The photos will run in the October issue. Come on down between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., and I’ll snap your photo, neighbor.

Directions are easy: Take Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard to 90th Street and head south. You want the fourth driveway off of 90th on the west side. Lunch will be served by Meatballz Italian Gourmet Deli.

To RSVP (preferred), contact Laureen Leston at 602.918.8808 or laureen@laureenleston.com.
