“Doughnut Dan” Brinton Opens 8th Valley Krispy Kreme and His Latest Concept Beauregard Food Co. Side by Side

The man that brought back to Arizona the south’s favorite doughnut – Krispy Kreme – is serving up a full menu of southern fare at his new restaurant concept Beauregard Food Co., newly opened on Market Street at D.C. Ranch.

Opening next door to Brinton’s newest Krispy Kreme neighborhood store, Beauregard Food Co. is as the sign reads “…a southern thing.” The menu has a Cajun flare and includes gumbo, and shrimp and crawfish wraps. Guests can also experience southern favorites such as fried pickles and comeback sauce (aka “Cajun ketchup”).

“People will soon find out that ‘Doughnut Dan’ knows more than doughnuts,” said Dan Brinton, franchise partner of Krispy Kreme Arizona and Beauregard Food Co. owner. “The restaurant business is in my blood and I’m just as passionate about my fried pickles as I am my doughnuts.”

Beauregard Food Co., named after Brinton’s great-great grandfather’s dry goods company established in 1898 in Clarksville, Tenn., is a 70-seat family- and wallet-friendly destination. Mud bugs, better known as children, have a variety of meals to choose from and are invited to draw and stamp on the paper-covered white tablecloths.

“This is my neighborhood, so I know first-hand that people want a place they can take their families for good food any night of the week,” said Brinton. “I hope to appeal to those folks as well as Valley residents looking for food that’s as fun as whittling and as comfortable as a rocking chair.”

Beauregard Food Co. is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Daily specials include offerings such as shrimp and grits, red beans and rice, shrimp and crawfish cheesecake, and etouffee. The address is 20825 N. Pima Rd. Suite 100.

The D.C. Ranch Krispy Kreme is open seven days a week from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and features 15 varieties of doughnuts, including Krispy Kreme’s signature Original Glazed® doughnut. The store offers 25-cent coffee, 99-cent specialty coffee beverages, and Shamrock Farms milk.

For more information regarding Beauregard Food Co. and Krispy Kreme Arizona, call 480.776.1912. Or, become a friend of Doughnut Dan on facebook.

Council appoints Bruce Washburn to

city attorney’s position

The City Council has appointed a deputy city attorney with more than 30 years of experience in the public and private sectors as Scottsdale’s new city attorney.

Deputy City Attorney Bruce Washburn was named to the position at the council’s Tuesday, Dec. 8 meeting.

Washburn has worked for Scottsdale since May 2003. Prior to his appointment, he had been serving as the deputy city attorney responsible for the litigation department. “I am honored to have been chosen for this position and I look forward to working with the council and staff in the days ahead,” Washburn said.

Before his career with Scottsdale, Washburn was with Ayers & Brown, P.C., of Phoenix, was a senior attorney with an Iowa utility company and had been a partner in two private law firms. He also was a law clerk for New Mexico Supreme Court Chief Justice LaFel E. Oman.

He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and a law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law.

The city attorney is one of six charter officers appointed by and reporting to the City Council.

Everyone is invited to come and enjoy complimentary food and cocktails.

Plus, NHL Phoenix Coyotes players, Petr Prucha and Martin Hanzal, will be on-hand signing autographs and taking pictures with their loyal fans, along with the team’s mascot Howler. Drawings will also be held for many exciting giveaways, including Coyotes game tickets, autographed NHL paraphernalia, skating and dining gift certificates and more. While you’re there, party goers can try out the Visual Sports simulator. Play golf, hockey, baseball, football and more. Who knows? Maybe Howler will challenge you to a puck shoot out.

“This is an exciting time for our two restaurants in the Ice Den. We invite everyone to stop by and see what the buzz is about in North Scottsdale,” said Eatwell and Drinkalott partner Quinn Goldsberry. “The grand opening will showcase Over Easy and 18° Neighborhood Grill’s high-quality food that’s offered at reasonable prices in a unique fun, family-friendly environment.”

18° serves many comfort food favorites. Menu highlights include roasted chicken, salads, ground-fresh hamburgers, mac and cheese, and made-from-scratch pizza. Over Easy also serves all of your breakfast favorites, along with a few truly unique menu items such as The Wolfpack and Big E’s Pile Up. Look for Paris-trained Chef Aaron May to bring his culinary flair to many standard American favorites at both restaurants.

Now we look forward to having everyone who lives and works in North Scottsdale corridor to check us out as we officially celebrate our grand opening next week.”

This is great news for the Airpark! An ASU master’s business program, geared to professionals who want to attend school at night, now has a permanent home in North Scottsdale. In recent years, ASU offered classes at three roving NoSco sites, but this is the MBA program’s first permanent site in the area–and it’s smack in the Airpark.

For those who might be scratching their head about where Hartford Drive is, it’s that street off Perimeter between Bell & Princess, near the Princess Cafe. Here’s a map.

It looks like classes won’t begin here for new students until the August ‘10 semester. I’ll post more info later this week. Until then, here is the official press release:

Scottsdale officials are welcoming news that Arizona State University’s W. P. Carey School of Business will bring its highly rated part-time MBA program to a location convenient to the Scottsdale Airpark, 8355 E. Hartford Drive.

The school will introduce the new location, at the northeast corner of Bell Road and 82nd Street, during an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

“This is a great location, easily accessible to the Scottsdale Airpark, one of the largest and most sought-after employment centers in the state,” said Mayor W. J. “Jim” Lane. “We made it a priority to assist ASU with this new location because a highly skilled and educated workforce is one of the primary reasons Scottsdale is an attractive city for employers.”

To help the school locate in Scottsdale, staff from the Economic Vitality and the Planning, Neighborhoods and Transportation divisions worked together to speed review and guide the project through the city’s processes.

“Scottsdale is one of the favored locations for start-up companies and for solid, medium-size businesses,” said Harold Stewart, executive director of the city’s Economic Vitality Division. “The convenience of a highly ranked master’s program in business fits well with the city’s efforts to help maintain an economically vital community for the long term. It is one more key asset in our program to recruit new businesses and retain those already here.”

The school offers one of the best part-time MBA programs in the country, with an evening MBA program ranked “Top 25″ in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

“We’ve had a presence in Scottsdale for several years, but we’re making it permanent with our new facility,” said W. P. Carey School of Business Dean Robert Mittelstaedt.

“Scottsdale has been one of our most popular locations, so we found a great space that will be convenient for those working and living in the East Valley,” said Beth Walker, associate dean of the W. P. Carey MBA program.

“This new facility offers four fully equipped team rooms, wireless network access throughout the entire suite, LCD displays, interactive monitors and easy access to the 101 freeway.”

The 21-month W. P. Carey evening MBA program offers a high-caliber core business curriculum, with the ability to specialize in several areas of emphasis, including finance, health care management, international business, marketing and supply chain management.

A popular 18-month evening accelerated version is also offered at the Tempe campus, with the next class starting in February. In both cases, students meet just two nights per week, allowing them to fit their MBA programs into their busy work and home lives.

[Editor's Note: This link should save you a little time. It appears to be the one with info on the MBA evening option at the Airpark locale, noting an August start date.]

If you missed the Scottsdale Airpark Meet Your Neighbor Lunch, more than 100 people attended, and the energy in the room was electric. I arrived about 20 minutes in, and felt like an hour wasn’t enough time to network since the raffle and chamber speeches are at the end.

I spoke with a first-time, non-chamber member who had some ideas for the next lunch, which will happen in November. She said she’d be willing to pay $20 for a table to display her collateral and help to make the event free so more people come.

An interesting idea. Those with display tables—if you had enough of them—could subsidize the $5 lunch for people who just want to network, like a mini tradeshow. Though a fiver isn’t much, a free lunch always brings out the crowds. (By the way, Meatballz really makes some delicious meatballs.)

This was funny … one of the Scottsdale Airpark News ad execs won the $25 Sam’s Club gift card in the raffle, and a Sam’s Club representative won our raffle donation of tix to Legally Blonde. They were thrilled and so were we.

I would love to share a photo of the event, but the wonderful Wordpress program I’m using has decided I can no longer (as of today) post photos that are larger than 2MB. I was told the Scottsdale chamber took video of the event and posted it on the web, but I just spent 10 minutes browsing their site and searching Google for keywords “Airpark Meet Your Neighbor” … and nothing turns up except links to my own blog.

Sounds like a discussion topic for the next social media class that I’m taking at the chamber with Dave Cooke.

Guess you’ll have to wait for the October issue of the Airpark News to get a glimpse. I apologize in advance for my photography anti-skills.
