“Doughnut Dan” Brinton Opens 8th Valley Krispy Kreme and His Latest Concept Beauregard Food Co. Side by Side

The man that brought back to Arizona the south’s favorite doughnut – Krispy Kreme – is serving up a full menu of southern fare at his new restaurant concept Beauregard Food Co., newly opened on Market Street at D.C. Ranch.

Opening next door to Brinton’s newest Krispy Kreme neighborhood store, Beauregard Food Co. is as the sign reads “…a southern thing.” The menu has a Cajun flare and includes gumbo, and shrimp and crawfish wraps. Guests can also experience southern favorites such as fried pickles and comeback sauce (aka “Cajun ketchup”).

“People will soon find out that ‘Doughnut Dan’ knows more than doughnuts,” said Dan Brinton, franchise partner of Krispy Kreme Arizona and Beauregard Food Co. owner. “The restaurant business is in my blood and I’m just as passionate about my fried pickles as I am my doughnuts.”

Beauregard Food Co., named after Brinton’s great-great grandfather’s dry goods company established in 1898 in Clarksville, Tenn., is a 70-seat family- and wallet-friendly destination. Mud bugs, better known as children, have a variety of meals to choose from and are invited to draw and stamp on the paper-covered white tablecloths.

“This is my neighborhood, so I know first-hand that people want a place they can take their families for good food any night of the week,” said Brinton. “I hope to appeal to those folks as well as Valley residents looking for food that’s as fun as whittling and as comfortable as a rocking chair.”

Beauregard Food Co. is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Daily specials include offerings such as shrimp and grits, red beans and rice, shrimp and crawfish cheesecake, and etouffee. The address is 20825 N. Pima Rd. Suite 100.

Official press release:

Tournament moves to northern California after three years at Grayhawk Golf  Club

“While we’re saddened that the Frys.com Open is leaving Scottsdale, we’re quite pleased with what the tournament was able to accomplish in its three years here at Grayhawk,” said Grayhawk Golf Club’s Del Cochran.  “Fry’s Electronics was an outstanding partner and we wish the tournament tremendous success.”

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The PGA TOUR and Fry’s Electronics announced  that the Frys.com Open, an official event on the PGA TOUR, will be moving to CordeValle in San Martin, Calif., which is south of San Jose and north of the Monterey Peninsula.  Next year’s event is scheduled for October 11-17 during the 2010 PGA TOUR season.

The Frys.com Open had a successful three-year run at Grayhawk Golf Club, culminating with a 2009 event full of fireworks.  Troy Matteson shot back-to-back 61’s, a new 36-hole PGA TOUR scoring record, and outlasted up-and-coming golfers Rickie Fowler and Jamie Lovemark in a two-hole playoff to earn his second career PGA TOUR victory (his first win came in 2006 at the Frys.com Open in Las Vegas).

The 2009 tournament also featured 4 aces, including a rare albatross (double-eagle) /ace combo in the same round by Nicholas Thompson, a PGA TOUR first.  Cameron Beckman won the 2008 tournament in a 2-hole playoff to jump from 175 to 86 on the money list to secure his card; while former Masters champion Mike Weir won the inaugural event in 2007.

Gregg Tryhus, president of Grayhawk Development, said, “We’ve developed some close personal relationships with the Fry’s family,” Tryhus said.  “We’re grateful they trusted us with their event for three years, and we’re confident they will have many more successful events.”

Located 30 minutes south of title sponsor Fry’s Electronics’ world headquarters in San Jose, Calif., CordeValle is an 18-hole, par-72 Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design that stretches across 7,169 yards of Northern California’s hillsides, canyons and broad meadows.

“We are very excited about moving the Frys.com Open to California and CordeValle,” said Kathy Kolder, executive vice president and a founder of Fry’s Electronics.  “Grayhawk Golf Club was such a great host site and the fans in the Valley were tremendous supporters for the Frys.com Open the last three years, we can’t thank them enough.”

The Frys.com Open strives to make an impact in the community through charitable donations and in three years has raised more than $1.7 million for charities like the American Institute of Mathematics, Thunderbirds Charities and the Fore Adoption Foundation.

The Frys.com Open is part of the PGA TOUR’s Fall Series and features a full-field (132 players), four-day tournament with a $5 million purse and $900,000 payout to the winner.  For more information go to www.frysopengolf.com or find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/frysopengolf.

I love, love, love Barro’s pizza. I grew up near the first location and practically lived in the corner booth.  This month, Barro’s will open a new locale at Grayhawk Plaza. Over the years, I’ve developed a severe addiction to the following delivery order: pepperoni and onion topping, small, extra-sauce, please leave in the oven for a couple extra minutes so the pepperoni starts to crisp on the edges.

Congrats to Mike & his family on this 28th location of the family-owned biz. If you live near the plaza, definitely give Barro’s a try. It just might become your favorite too.

Here’s the official press release:

New Scottsdale Location at Grayhawk Plaza Marks Fourth New Restaurant Opened in 2009

As national quick-service restaurants wrestle with the sagging national economy, a Carefree-based pizza concept continues to grow throughout the Valley as it prepares to open its 28th restaurant this month at Grayhawk Plaza in Scottsdale.

Grayhawk Plaza, located one mile north of the Loop 101 on Scottsdale Road, opened in 2001 and is recognized as one of Scottsdale’s premier neighborhood shopping centers.  Close to the entrance of the affluent master planned community of Grayhawk, the center is anchored by a 58,000-square-foot Bashas’ Supermarket and also includes a Walgreen’s, Tutor Time Day Care, Pei Wei, Leslie’s Poolmart, and Blockbuster Video.

The center is located in close proximity to some of north Scottsdale’s most successful residential developments, including DC Ranch, Ironwood Village, Pinnacle Peak Country Club and McDowell Mountain Ranch.

This is great news for the Airpark! An ASU master’s business program, geared to professionals who want to attend school at night, now has a permanent home in North Scottsdale. In recent years, ASU offered classes at three roving NoSco sites, but this is the MBA program’s first permanent site in the area–and it’s smack in the Airpark.

For those who might be scratching their head about where Hartford Drive is, it’s that street off Perimeter between Bell & Princess, near the Princess Cafe. Here’s a map.

It looks like classes won’t begin here for new students until the August ‘10 semester. I’ll post more info later this week. Until then, here is the official press release:

Scottsdale officials are welcoming news that Arizona State University’s W. P. Carey School of Business will bring its highly rated part-time MBA program to a location convenient to the Scottsdale Airpark, 8355 E. Hartford Drive.

The school will introduce the new location, at the northeast corner of Bell Road and 82nd Street, during an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

“This is a great location, easily accessible to the Scottsdale Airpark, one of the largest and most sought-after employment centers in the state,” said Mayor W. J. “Jim” Lane. “We made it a priority to assist ASU with this new location because a highly skilled and educated workforce is one of the primary reasons Scottsdale is an attractive city for employers.”

To help the school locate in Scottsdale, staff from the Economic Vitality and the Planning, Neighborhoods and Transportation divisions worked together to speed review and guide the project through the city’s processes.

“Scottsdale is one of the favored locations for start-up companies and for solid, medium-size businesses,” said Harold Stewart, executive director of the city’s Economic Vitality Division. “The convenience of a highly ranked master’s program in business fits well with the city’s efforts to help maintain an economically vital community for the long term. It is one more key asset in our program to recruit new businesses and retain those already here.”

The school offers one of the best part-time MBA programs in the country, with an evening MBA program ranked “Top 25″ in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

“We’ve had a presence in Scottsdale for several years, but we’re making it permanent with our new facility,” said W. P. Carey School of Business Dean Robert Mittelstaedt.

“Scottsdale has been one of our most popular locations, so we found a great space that will be convenient for those working and living in the East Valley,” said Beth Walker, associate dean of the W. P. Carey MBA program.

“This new facility offers four fully equipped team rooms, wireless network access throughout the entire suite, LCD displays, interactive monitors and easy access to the 101 freeway.”

The 21-month W. P. Carey evening MBA program offers a high-caliber core business curriculum, with the ability to specialize in several areas of emphasis, including finance, health care management, international business, marketing and supply chain management.

A popular 18-month evening accelerated version is also offered at the Tempe campus, with the next class starting in February. In both cases, students meet just two nights per week, allowing them to fit their MBA programs into their busy work and home lives.

[Editor's Note: This link should save you a little time. It appears to be the one with info on the MBA evening option at the Airpark locale, noting an August start date.]
